I just wish that doing the right thing was easier. (2009) A mixed media installation exploring deception, authenticity, and the blurred lines between what is real and what is not. The coexistence of fake objects (fortunes, documents, matchbooks, rubberbands, photographs, cigarette butts, tickets, tape) and their real counterparts provokes the viewer to engage in a close examination of reality and fakery and invites the viewer to experience a moment of deception and confusion during which objects become more or less real upon closer investigation. The illusion extends to the surface of the podium on which painted trompe-l'oeil bingo tickets and tape coexist with their real counterparts.

All tickets and ticket stubs: Pencil and gouache on bristol and card stock.

All photograph faces and backs: Pencil and color pencil on bristol.

Two cigarette butts: Gouache and acrylic on wood dowel. Five real cigarettes in plastic bag.

Matchbook: Pencil, color pencil and gouache on bristol.

Document stamp: Ink and color pencil on paper. |
